Food Sovereignty

Food Sovereignty is a concept used increasingly by the global movement for justice and sustainability in the food system, led by La Via Campesina but used also by many other groups. We are developing a working group to look at the ideas expressed in the language of food sovereignty and see how they relate to the way in which Food Secure Canada thinks about food security and issues such as food localism, sustainability, and international solidarity.

We are also engaged in a project to see how the concepts of food sovereignty fit with the specific food policy objectives of Food Secure Canada and its members.

The People's Food Policy Project builds on the work of the People's Food Commission (1977-1980) to engage Canadians in developing a concrete food policy for Canada to work towards ensuring domestic food sovereignty.

We are beginning with consultations to ensure that the process supports the work towards appropriate food policies across the country.
