Projects

Food Secure Canada works to develop projects and campaigns of interest to our members, including those related to housing, health, social policy, transportation, agriculture, education, and community.

Initial Action Agenda
In October 2005, delegates to the 3rd National Food Security Assembly in Waterloo, Ontario, developed an initial action agenda for Food Secure Canada (FSC)/Sécurité Alimentaire Canada (SAC), focusing on research and policy development; strategic alliances and capacity building; education and outreach; and advocacy. For more details, see the full text of the action agenda.

Bits and Bytes
British Columbia Interior Health has initiated a project called Building Community Food Security with Bits and Bytes. The focus of the project is to establish and monitor effective models for mentoring from a distance to address the needs of community food security activists in far flung communities with varying populations, food security, and technological supports. One core need is for access to reliable and up-to-date information, and Food Secure Canada will be hosting a searchable database onb food security, starting with information developed by the project. The People's Food Policy Project
30 years ago, the People's Food Commission held hearings in 75 communities across Canada about the food system and came to the conclusion that the problems people were observing were not the fault of either food producers nor consumers, but the result of a system that put power in the hands of the corporations who control the space between them.

The official launch of the People's Food Policy Project will take place at the National Assembly – Reclaiming our Food System: A Call to Action – in Ottawa, November 7-10 2008. The PFPP will will explore how Food Sovereignty and the principles it embodies can be relevant and useful in working towards the goals of the Canadian movement for food security. The project’s ultimate goal is a suite of food policies, generated by the people working on food issues across the country, which will together provide a just and sustainable food system – food sovereignty – in the face of the imminent breakdown of the current globalized food system.
